Or an L&B Manning Wardle on a Scottish based layout. This can go on and on, but it stuck with me for sometime, and (although many would disagree) this statement is right. It doesn’t look right seeing a GVR tram running in a harbour layout. Not that I dislike it kind of set up. I just don’t want it for my layout. So because I have a few iconic kit wait to be built I thought I would modify the kits to adapt the look. I can then build more of a story behind the loco’s and the layout. This is my modified versions of Russell. Altered for my Backwoods Miniatures kit. I might not do it as a 2-6-4 and just keep the 2-6-2 wheel arrangement. I think the bottom one looks the best. I find that this process helps in planning the project and prevents me from loosing focus. Well this is the theory. I have already built one of these locomotives, and for the best part I’m happy with it. Although I will make some modifications to future versions. I not sure what numbers and different variations of what locomotives I’m planning, but I hope this will help me work that out. I most add that this isn’t a really Great Western Railway locomotive. Similar locomotive were built in Glasgow by the NBRC around 1909 for use on the Shimla Kalka Railway in India. It’s slightly modified mainly to make it look less colonial, as the original was built for the Burma railway as a meter gauge locomotive. It’s seen here in Great Western livery, although I’m not sure how I would home a locomotive like this if I was to try and build it. I’m not sure it would fit along side my carefully planned locomotive fleet. The black triangles are the puddles which have been modelled first, stuck down with PVA, and ballasted around with clay to cover the edges. Once the clay has dried I will add some scatter material, then spray paint it. The base of the chimney hasn’t been modelled because there will be another building covering that end of the foundry building. Sadly it got smashed up during my move to Bristol. I have toyed with the idea of having it incorporated in my current layout as it’s size and position is a bit intrusive on the rest of it, but I do like it and today fixed the damaged areas. Because the last layout was so short, I had removed the ships stern to allow it to fit. Luckily I kept the removed part and then reattached it shortly after deciding to extend the layout. It’s built using the hull of a 1/142 Revell Trawler kit, and heavily modified to a design produced by Harvey’s & Sons Iron Foundry in 1/76 scale. These cargo vessels ran copper and tin ore to the furnaces in South Wales, returning with engine coal for the mines. It’s similar to ‘SS Minros’ and ‘SS Carnsew’ which were owned by the West Cornwall steamship company. I am really pleased with how this has turned out, although this would be the third time I have built this as I had built a smaller foundry on the original 2ft long layout I built before extending it into this 6ft long layout. Also the cakebox challenge was an attempt to develop the idea. So this is a much larger 3rd edition of Harvey’s foundry and locomotive shed. The locomotive shed has been kit bashed from a Ratio goods shed kit and a Kibri factory building. Strangely I alway build the kits first , and then rip them up to create the scratch built structures. It’s a long way of doing it, but it seems to be the best way for me to picture the structure. The foundry to the side is completely scratch built. I like how similar this is to my cakebox challenge model, and I have made some great improvements. The puddles have turned out much better have used glass instead of resin, and pointing the brick work with Humbrol model filler has made it look much more authentic. The track work and ground has turned out just as I wanted it, In fact I didn’t really add any ballast which I wound have normally done. I’ve also mixed all the colours on the model using a range of different paint brands and pastels so there is no actual branded colour on the whole piece. The location is Harvey’s Foundry, Penpol loco sheds, South Quay. The crane tank was named after a Stone Age hill fort that looks over Hayle estuary, now know as ‘Tencrom’. The Canadian geese passing in the back ground nest over on the south coast at Marazion near St Michael’s Mount. They fly every day to feed on the easterly end of the estuary, near Harvey’s rivals, The CCC (Cornwall Copper Company) whose works were also on the east side of Hayle. She was delivered to Harvey’s Foundry new in 1897. The Gwen Class was chosen due to the typically robust design that this Leeds manufacturer was producing at the time. She originally carried the name ’Angarrack’ after a village located to the east of Hayle. After an extensive overhaul she had the name plates removed, and gained the typical Harvey’s livery. A branch line was constructed in 1884 to connect Hayle Harbour to the Angarrack smelters, on which she spent most of her working life. This was 1 of 4 6-coupled Pecketts belonging to the Cornwall Electric Power Company (CEPC) located on the north quay of Hayle Harbour. She wears the original Black with white lined livery used by the power station. Later they changed it to a dark blue livery, but shortly after this desperate face lift to modernise their appearance. Nationalization condemned the power stations steep 2ft gauge branch line, and converted it to standard gauge in the mid 50’s. She was a late addition to Harvey’s fleet having arrived in 1929 to replace the worn out no. 5 Fox walker & sons cabless 0-4-0. The original No.5 had arrived in 1886 and was named Carnsew. The Bagnall replacement was never named but carried the original’s number 5. This is both the winding engine and pumping engine to drain the deep Irish coal mines of BallyCastle. Bann Kiligan colliery will be the name of the layout and the Colliery I am modelling. It is a fictitious coal mine that has been taken into NCB ownership. Two shafts make up the colliery and this particular shaft was nicknamed ‘Killreas Quarter’ having been named after the Killrea canal it is located next to. Making scale trees is something I have avoided over the years I’ve been modelling, but now two are on the build list. I’ve always considered trees to be a big topic in model making, but wanting to avoid prebuilt or kit built trees. Mainly because I wanted to model a specific trees rather than the generic model ‘tree’. When visiting Pendon last, I spoke at length with a volunteer about the true size of trees. So taking in what he said I’ve decided to build these slightly bigger than what feels right. I understand that things need scaling down especially when there is limited space available on a model railway layout. I suppose we will see how they look on the layout to decide wether they are in the correct scale or not. When making flock you obviously have complete control over your desired colour mix, but it turns out in slightly different grades which gives a really naturally coloured blend. After leaning this Method I will never buy flock again. I’m really enjoying finding cheaper ways of working, as life with a young family can be expensive, and will always take priority over railway modeling, but using everyday materials certainly makes these projects much more achievable when keeping the costs minimal. If anyone wants to learn how to make their own flocks I suggest watching Luke’s aps on YouTube @geekgamingscenics. I would class this as a super rare model in this form. This is a Doxford crane tank by Backwoods miniatures but converted into 009 gauge. I have seen a few of these models built in the intended P4 gauge, but never in 009. The prototypes were standard gauge but I wanted one for my 009 foundry/harbour layout. I had both the pannier 0-6-0 chassis and the kato 103 0-4-0 chassis, and I've decided to use the kato as its easy to add the DCC decoder, and the pannier chassis isn't ideal for dcc. Ive replaced the foot plate and built the coal bunker. I’ve curved the edges on the coal bunker to match the front edges on the tanks. The coal bunker will now house the decoder instead of it being glued to the inside of the roof panel, with the wires hidden behind the crew. I made the connecting rods from strips of left over flets from Backwoods kits. Annoyingly my 0.8 drill bit is really blunt and was a pig drilling the holes for the crank pins. I must admit, I have cheated a little with the gauge, as I’m using 12mm track in 4mm scale, which represents 3ft in reality, but I’m calling it meter gauge which is 3.28ft. Of course this slightly incorrect track gauge is no different to 00 gauge being 16.5mm instead of 18.2mm or 009 gauge track being used to represent 2ft gauge. So I’m happy with the compromise, and it looks just right. I’m looking forward to printing the thing, but first I have to build a tool box, add hand rails, finish some of the cab pipe work, sanding gear, lamp irons, and add the roof. Oh! It is still awaiting transfers and a little coal in the bunker, but for the most part it’s finished. I’m very pleased with the outcome and as its been built using the tank from a butchered Airfix austerity kit, styrene sheet, milliput and a hand full of odd bits from the bits box, I reckon the total cost of the build is about £8-10. The most unfortunate thing is the rear wheels have a different spoke pattern, so I have added a slightly different weight to the rear wheelset. The livery is based on the mighty ‘Mardy Monster’ in its last years of work at Tower Colliery. Very weathered and extra grimy. I have left the glass out of one of the rear windows to make it look as if it’s smashed, but I might still add another cracked one instead. I will build my own. Well try at least. So far I’ve used pretty much just plastic card and resin. So the cost of the body at this stage, has been minimal. Ive also decided that there is few areas that need ‘bulking up’... Underneath the firebox between the drive wheels and rear bogie. It has been made using bits of the instructions I found online of the Backwoods DHR Class C kit. Cheeky I know, but I’ve been after this kit for a while, as it’s out of production every time it’s listed on eBay it goes for more than £400! So my only option was to try and build it, and I’m glad I did.
