Hard water causes scale build-up in locomotive boilers, so water softener chemicals are added to make the scale build up as a sludge that can be flushed out at regular intervals.

ICI made the Alfloc treatment as shown here, used by operators such as British Gypsum, Port of Bristol Authority, United Steel Company, among others.

The tank featured a crosshead-driven pump. On some locos this drive was also used for a mechanical lubricator.
